Today I delivered 12 preemie caps to the neonatal intensive care unit at Southside Regional Medical Center. The folks over there were so happy to get the caps. They were particularly thrilled that they were small, apparently most of the knitted caps they get are for full-term babies. I read in a preemie cap pattern somewhere that the average size of a preemie's head is like that of an orange. What precious little gifts these babies are! I pray that God will continue to bless these little angels and the doctors, nurses, volunteers and other hospital staff that take such good care of them.

our grandbaby was a preemie, born 12 weeks early. and i still have the little cap that my precious kelcie was given while she was in the nicu unit. we ended up using the toe of a soft sock because there were none her size. this was a wonderful gift to many and how blessed they are!
I've read somewhere (might be in one of my knitting pattern booklets for baby items) that the hospitals always have plenty of hats and things for full term babies, but they often run out very quickly of items for premies. I have some patterns for hats and sweaters and leggins and booties that start at a premie size and go up to a 10 lb baby. I should get it out and make some more items.
what a lovely thing to do, Syd. Tell me -- what kind of yarn (fiber) did you use for those hats?
wonderful idea. Makes me want to take up knitting.
What cute hats!
